Of words, stories and assignments

While going through a pile of papers I found something interesting

A year ago, when I joined my first year classes, I got an assignment in creative writing on the first day itself. We were given 5 words and we were asked to build a story around them. There was no constraint on the word usage but I chose to stick to as less as possible.

The words were: DOOR, AXE, MIRROR, DRAIN, LEGS

Here are the two versions that I wrote:

#1: His legs grew heavier as he unlocked his front door. He looked tired and drained out but his clothes still smelled of his favourite AXE deodorant. Although he was still in his early thirties, the mirror reflected a different story. All he needed right now was a nice cup of coffee.

#2: She was woken up in the middle of the night by a noise. It was like an axe hitting a metal. At first she thought she was dreaming but then she heard it again. Mustering up all her courage, she moved into the hall. Something on her right moved and her heart skipped a beat. It was just a mirror she was looking at. Her legs were trembling as she slowly pushes open the kitchen door. She fumbled for the light switch and found the button just in time to see a rat going down his favourite kitchen drain.

My second year classes start tomorrow and I guess I have come a long way since these stories both as a person and a writer. Looking forward to another year.

i guess thats how they like to start off the mass comm season..my bro had joined the course a few yrs back and they gave his class a similar exercise. it was a wonder how creative people could be with those five words. one person rolled them all into a short sweet sentence and it made perfect sense.

Heartless-2

Cold blooded..emotionless..were the adjectives everyone gave her. ‘You don’t know how to express yourself’, they would say. ‘You don’t have any love in you, you really are heartless.’ Even the ‘closet’ of her friends would complain. She would have no answers or explanations. That was the way she was. That day, like any other, she was alone at her apartment. The chaos outside did not bother her. The screams of help fell on dead ears. They found her sitting on her couch, reading a book. Everything in the room was placed neatly as if she had just cleaned it. Their sight did not bother her. Her face, like a stone, did not reveal any emotion. But deep inside, her stomach churned. She calmed herself by reminding herself what everyone said, she was heartless. They could do her no harm. She smiled. As they proceeded to rip her apart, a drop of tear fell. She did have a heart. ************************************************************************ You can read the first part here

LOST

She had been walking. For how long, even she did not remember. Walking in the woods, lost on the woods, she had no sense of direction, making it hard to find her way. She seemed to be circling around. The trees started to look familiar. She was little scared. Of the dark, no, but of the unknown. The darkness in fact comforted her. It let her hide her insecurities, her fear and her apprehensions. She crossed the same tree for the third time. She knew it was the same. Suddenly she realised that even though she was lost, she was at peace. She knew then, she did not want to leave. She had found her way. Her way was to remain lost.
